This is the Official Commemorative Bronze Medal of the Civil War Centennial Commission. The obverse side depicts: THE IMAGE OF ULYSSES S. GRANT AND ROBERT E. LEE AND READS “LET US HAVE PEACE” AND “CONSCIOUSNESS OF DUTY FAITHFULLY PERFORMED” The reverse side depicts: THE IMAGE OF AMERICAN EAGLE ABOVE A UNION AND A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER AND READS “THE CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL COMMISSION 1961-1965″ This Rare, High Relief Medal is struck in Bronze, measures 64 mm in diameter (2.5”) and weighs in at 139 grams or 4.9 ounces. This medal was struck by Medallic Art Co. in New York and comes packaged in its original white leatherette rigid box and cotton pad to protect the medal while in storage. The medal is in Uncirculated condition but does have a light pleasantly toned patina that has developed over the years, as shown in the photographs. The artist that designed the medal was Joseph E. Renier, his initials appear on the very bottom of Ulysses S. Grant’s bust of this medal. They are very faint, and appear as follows: J. E. R. S.C. Also stamped into the rim are the following: “MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y. BRONZE” These Bronze Medals are quite rare and beautiful, very collectable, and also make great Numismatic / Exonumia gifts.
