eBay 1962 Amperex Bugle Boy 12AX7 / ECC83 / Short Plate 1 Single Tube GOOD PAINT | TESTS ANOS | NICELY BALANCED | THE LEGEND | Δ2F2 | AGED TO PERFECTION There isn’t much left to say about these Bugle Boys the legends haven’t covered. But I’ll say this, as cool, powerful and iconic as they are — practically celebrities, they still have to pay for parking. Don’t let them tell you otherwise, no matter how sweet they sing. Amperex tubes are the benchmark level, iconic, legendary tubes that they are for a reason. Balanced is the first word that comes to mind; they don’t emphasize the highs, or the mid-range or the low end at the expense of any of the others. Their sound tends to have just a kiss of overall warmth, without ever becoming saccharine or so forward as to feel uninvitedly in your face. I find Amperex made tubes to be a generally transparent, natural, pleasant sounding tube without ever becoming clinical, sterile, or unpleasantly accurate. The top end is airy, extending nicely without rolling off. The mid-range has just enough warmth to keep you close but not so sweet as to ever be saccharine or outshine the top or low ends. The low end works in fantastic balance with the top end and mid-range to create a low end with a controlled accuracy that manages to still feel relaxed enough to be pleasant listening. Not too tight, not too fast. And never sloppy like you might find in some of the more undesirable “bangers and mash” style British made tubes. The sound stage is open, expansive, and brings great dimension to the listening experience. While musical, warm, transparent, accurate, and pleasant to listen to it’s wonderful balance of all these things that defines the Amperex sound for me.
