Up for sale is an extraordinarily rare piece of early Hires Root Beer brand advertising stoneware / pottery. It’s a generally round cylindrical/vase shaped jug widest at the shoulder, and with a gracefully curving applied handle curled in low on the neck and attached below the shoulder at the other end. The lower half of the jug is glazed in an opaque brown so-called Albany slip glaze, while the upper half is coated in a cream-colored Bristol slip with slight craquelure. It’s about 8 1/2″ tall, and 3 1/8″ in diameter at the base. There is extensive decoration to the jug’s surface, consisting of gilt / gold leaf sponging over stenciled “Olde English” style lettering which reads: “Hire’s / Root Beer / The Great Health Drink”. On either side there is also a pair of stenciled gilt floral sprigs/vines with hand-painted purple enameled petals. Additional gilding surrounds the midsection border/band, and there’s a stripe along the handle and just below the spout as well. This decoration was all done after the jug’s initial firing in a specialized decorator’s factory workshop, and then fired again in a lower-temperature kiln to fully adhere with the glaze. The enamel and gold is fired on and thus quite strong, although it can eventually wear down through heavy usage. This example is no exception and you will find some wear/slight losses to the gilding especially around the spout and a bit to the interior of the lettering low on the body. No chips or cracks though, and the minor expected wear is no big deal in my opinion. It’s theorized that the Fulper Pottery Co. of Flemington NJ had something to do with these jugs, which routinely turn up with advertising usually for whiskey distributors and saloons/bottlers or similar branding. This Hire’s version is significantly rarer but not unheard of. Don’t miss a chance at one of these very very unusual Hires jugs – you’ll see 500 of the stoneware “ugly kid” mugs made in Germany from the same era for every one of these American-made gaudy advertising jugs.
