ORIGINAL FEBRUARY 7, 1781 EDITION OF THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE NEWSPAPER PROVIDING DETAILED COVERAGE ON THE BATTLE OF MORRISANIA AND THE LIBERATION OF SLAVES The Pennsylvania Gazette was founded by Benjamin Franklin and it was one of the United States’ most prominent newspapers from 1728 to 1800. It swayed public opinion in the colonies against British rule and hastened the onset of the American Revolution. Franklin partnered with David Hall in 1748 and sold his share to Hall in 1766, who later that same year partnered with William Sellers. THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE WAS FOUNDED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND IT WAS ONE OF THE UNITED STATES’ MOST PROMINENT NEWSPAPERS Contains an order from the Continental Congress and an extract of a letter from George Washington on the Battle of Morrisania: “Philadelphia, February 7. In Congress, February 5, 1781. Ordered, That the report of Major-General Parsons, with the papers enclosed, relative to his successful enterprise against the enemy’s post at Morrisania, together with so much of General Washington’s letter of 31st January last as relates thereto, be referred to the Committee of Intelligence: And that the Commander in Chief return the thanks of Congress to Major-General Parsons, and the officers and men under his command, and inform him, that Congress have directed this publication to be made, in testimony of their approbation of his judicious arrangements, and of the spirit and military conduct displayed by the officers and men employed under him on the occasion. Extract from the Minutes, C. Thomson, Secretary,” and “Extract of a letter from General Washington to Congress, dated Head Quarters, January 31, 1781. ‘Inclosed are two reports of Major-General Parsons, and Lieutenant-Colonel Hull, of an enterprise against Delancey’s corps at West-Chester, in which, with small lots on our side, the barracks of the corps, and large quantity of forage, were destroyed—fifty-two prisoners and a considerable number of horses and cattle brought off, and a bridge across Haerlem, under protection of one of the enemy’s redoubts, burnt. General Parsons’ arrangements were judicious, and the conduct of the officers and men employed upon the occasion entitled to the highest praise. The position of the corps, two or three miles within some of the enemy’s redoubts, required address and courage in the execution of the enterprise.’” In addition, there are two letters from William Hull to Parsons and Samuel Holden Parsons to William Heath. On January 22, 1781 at Morrisania, New York, an American force, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Hull, led a raid to within three miles of the British lines. He attacked the headquarters of Lt. Col. James De Lancey’s Tory Battalion, burned barracks and the pontoon bridge over the Harlem River, and destroyed a great store of forage. The Americans withdrew with 52 Tory prisoners, along with some horses and cattle. De Lancey gathered up his scattered forces and harassed the Americans during their withdrawal all the way to the Williams’ Bridge. On the other side of the bridge was a large contingent of Americans with two cannons. The Tory force fell back, collected their wounded, buried their dead, and proceeded to rebuild their burned down huts. “EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM GENERAL WASHINGTON TO CONGRESS, DATED HEAD QUARTERS, JANUARY 31, 1781. ‘INCLOSED ARE TWO REPORTS OF MAJOR-GENERAL PARSONS, AND LIEUTENANT-COLONEL HULL, OF AN ENTERPRISE AGAINST DELANCEY’S CORPS AT WEST-CHESTER” Anonymous liberation of a slave, along with a sale notice for a slave: “To the Friends of Universal Liberty, Be it Known, That the writer of this advertisement, wishing to extend that liberty to others he claims for himself, proposes to liberate a strong healthy Negroe Man, in the following manner; having bought him not long since on easy terms, he means to sell him a few years to recover some part of the purchase money, and to give him his liberty at the end of this term. He is a good farmer, much inclined to drive a team and very capable of the business,” and “To Be Sold, A Lusty strong young Negroe Man, fit for town or country work, about twenty-three years of age. Enquire of the Printers.” “TO THE FRIENDS OF UNIVERSAL LIBERTY, BE IT KNOWN, THAT THE WRITER OF THIS ADVERTISEMENT, WISHING TO EXTEND THAT LIBERTY TO OTHERS HE CLAIMS FOR HIMSELF, PROPOSES TO LIBERATE A STRONG HEALTHY NEGROE MAN” Includes a fascinating reward for important documents from ambassadors Benjamin Franklin and John Jay being lost during transit: “Two Thousand Dollars Reward.
