This is a listing for a HEUER Doctors Pulsograph 1914-1922, HEUER dba “Ed Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co”. Serial Number 31422. Ten (10) year production only. First of the early Wrist Watches by Heuer, World War 1 era. My Heuer Item Number 6a. Ebay item # 360. “Heuer”, “TAG-Heuer”, “Ed Heuer & Co” and “Rose Watch Company”, “Doctors Pulsograph”. Heuer Doctors Pulsograph 1915-1920’s, Ed Heuer & Co. dba Rose Watch Co. Serial Number “31422”. This is similar to the Heuer Doctors Pulsograph 1914 , Serial Number “31067” that I sold to the TAG-Heuer Museum (Branch of LVMH Swiss Manufactures, S.A.) on August 21, 2017. The main difference was the TAG-Heuer Museum’s purchase was 11 Jewels and this Doctors Pulsograph is 13 Jewels. “Ed. Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co” 1912 to 1922 are very rare. Ten (10) year production only. First of the early Wrist Watches by Heuer, World War 1 era. The movement is signed “Rose W. Co.”. It is also signed “13 THIRTEEN JEWELS 3 THREE ADJMT’S”, with the serial number “31422”, “SWISS” and with the Rose logo which is a rose flower in a circle. HISTORY: This is a Heuer Doctors Watch. The history begins with Charles-Auguste Heuer, the son of Edouard Heuer, which founded “E. HEUER & COMPAGNIE”. While visiting his doctor concerning an ailment, the doctor took Charles-Auguste pulse by counting his heartbeat for sixty seconds. This procedure was slow and not accurate as frequent errors were made. Charles-Auguste decided that he could invent a better measuring instrument for measuring the heartbeat. In 1908 Charles-Auguste Heuer, Jules-Edouard Heuer, and E. HEUER & COMPAGNIE introduced the “Sphygmometer”, a chronograph, for measuring the heartbeat with mathematical precision. The dial graduations have been calculated on the basis of twenty beats. Start the chronograph as soon as you begin to take the pulse. Count twenty beats and stop the chronograph. The chronograph hand will indicate exactly the number of heartbeats per minute. Aware that they had manufactured a watch that was very costly, Heuer designed another watch without the chronograph, which he named the “PULSOGRAPHE” which he also patented. Now to complete the rest of this history. In 1912 Charles-Auguste and Jules-Edouard at the urging of their American partner Henry Freund (New York City Jeweler & Importer) decided to use the trade name “ROSE WATCH COMPANY” on all watch movements imported into the USA. Thus on April 2nd, 1912 the company was renamed “Ed Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co.”. It was during this time period that all watch movement had to bear the name of the maker as required by U.S. Customs. It was also during this time period that a high customs tariff on complete Swiss watches was in place. Therefore, Heuer, would send a completed movement without a case. The movement would then be installed in a watch case made in the U.S.A. It was also during this time period, starting in 1914 that Heuer started producing wrist watches. These early wristwatches look like a pocket watch that had wire lugs attached and this is exactly what they were. In 1922, Heuer stopped producing the “Rose” watch brand. So, for approximately 10 years the Ed Heuer & Co. use the name Rose Watch Co. on all the watches sold in the U.S.A. So when you see a early watch with the movement signed “ROSE W. Co.” it was manufactured by Ed Heuer & Co. For more information please read Heuer & TAG Heuer (MASTERING TIME) by Gisbert L. Brunner in collaboration with Marc Sich, Swiss Timpiece Markers 1775-1975 by Kathleen H. Pritchard and Vintage Wristwatch Report Vol. 4 No. 9 by Bruce Shawkey. Most of my information has come from these sources as well as my own personal research. DESCRIPTION: Dial: The dial is white porcelain. The dial is signed “PULSOGRAPHE”, “DEPOSE”, and “SWISS MADE” above the continuous second register. The hour marker are 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 and are all black numerals. Located where the 6 o’clock position is the continuous second hand. The Pulsographe number are all red. The dial is also signed “BASE 20 BEATS”. The dial is in mint perfect condition and is original to this watch. No breaks, cracks or fading. It should be noted that the name “PULSOGRAPHE” (English translation is Pulsograph) was patented by Ed Heuer & Co. in 1908. Under the “PULSOGRAPHE” is the notification of “PATENT” (Swiss translation is DEPOSE ). This would be considered a signed dial by Ed Heuer & Co. and could possible be one of Heuer’s first wristwatches with a signed dial. This is a rare historical watch concerning the great watchmaking firm of Heuer. Hands: All the hands are bright gun metal blue and in perfect condition with all blue intact. Crown: Is a large push button crown that is copper colored and in perfect condition. Pull the crown up to set the time. Push the button on the crown once to start the pulse timer. Push it again the stop the timer. Push it for third time to return the timer to the start position. Work and functions perfectly. Crown is 9mm long and 8mm at the widest part. Movement: The movement is signed “Rose W. Co.”. It is also signed “13 THIRTEEN JEWELS 3 THREE ADJMT’S”, with the serial number “31422”, “SWISS” and with the Rose logo which is a rose flower in a circle. I am not positive but I think the movement is a “LeCoultre” or possible a Valjoux , I stand to be corrected. The movement run perfectly keeping excellent time. The pulsograph works perfectly also. Based upon the movement’s serial number I would suggest that it was a later manufacture around 1919-1920. The first Pulsographe’s were 11 Jewels and the latter ones 13 Jewels. Case: The case is hinged and signed “NICKEL SILVER ILLINOIS WATCH CASE CO.”. The case has the serial number “206848”. The case interior is also jeweled finished. Has two wire lugs. The case is in nice condition and snaps closed tightly with a click. The case is correct and original to this Pulsographe. The case size is 35mm and from lug to lug is 42mm. The case does not have any dents. Crystal: The crystal is glass and in perfect condition with no breaks, cracks or scratches. This watch with 4 others (total of 5) came out of a New York City estate from one of the heirs of Henry Freund’s watchmaker who installed the movements in the cases. I owned 4 of the 5 Pulsographe. I have since sold one on eBay. I also received other parts and movements but these were the only complete watches. The 4 Pulsographe that I possessed are all different variation either in signature on the dial or movement and number of jewels in the movement. There are probably other surviving Pulsographe but not in the condition of these 5 watches that came out of this estate. This is an extremely rare Pulsographe made by Ed Heuer & Co between 1914 and 1922 for doctors and nurses in the U.S.A. It should also be noted that Ed Heuer & Co also used the name “Paul Valette” with LeCoultre movements from 1923 until 1937. Ed Heuer & Co also owned the “Jules Jurgensen” name from 1919 until 1936. Here are the serial numbers (the 2 in my possession and the one I sold to the TAG-Heuer Museum) and approximate year they were produced: 1. HEUER Doctors PULSOGRAPHE 1914 wristwatch, dba “Ed Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co.”, serial number 31067 The movement is signed “Rose W. Co.”. It is also signed “11 ELEVEN JEWELS 3 THREE ADJMT’S”, with the serial number “31067”, “SWISS” and with the Rose logo which is a rose flower in a circle. (This Heuer Doctors Pulsographe (S.N. 31067) was sold to the TAG-Heuer Museum on August 21, 2017) 2. HEUER Doctors Pulsograph 1914-1922, HEUER dba “Ed Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co”, serial number 31083. The movement is signed “Rose W. Co.”. It is also signed “11 ELEVEN JEWELS 3 THREE ADJMT’S”, with the serial number “31083”, “SWISS” and with the Rose logo which is a rose flower in a circle. 3. HEUER PULSOGRAPH 1915-1920s Doctor Watch Rose Watch Co., serial number 31422. The movement is signed “Rose W. Co.”. It is also signed “13 THIRTEEN JEWELS 3 THREE ADJMT’S”, with the serial number “31422”, “SWISS” and with the Rose logo which is a rose flower in a circle. (This is the one for sale in this auction. Serial Number 31422). It was between serial number 31083 and serial number 31379 that the jewels in the movement went from 11 jewels to 13 jewels. These three (3) early Heuer transitional pocket watches to wrist watches, first of the doctors watches, and bearing the Heuer name of Rose Watch Company are truly part of watch history, Heuer history, horology, and mechanical evolution. These three (3) Pulsographe are worth more than I have them listed for. They are rare. 4. I also have 5 Complete Heuer Rose Watch Company Movements with 4 perfect dials and numerous parts for the Pulsograph Doctor’s Watch. MORE HISTORY: In the year of our Lord 1860, Edouard Heuer founds a watchmaking studio in Saint-Imier. In 1864 Edouard Heuer transfers his firm to Brigg and names it “Edouard Heuer & Cie.”. In 1867 Edouard Heuer establishes himself and his company in the watchmaking city of Bienne. In 1888 Edouard Heuer hands the business over to his son, Jules-Edouard Heuer. In 1891 Charles-Auguste Heuer becomes a company employee, On April 30th, 1892 Edouard Heuer dies at the age of fifty-two. In 1902 Jules-Edouard Heuer and Charles-Auguste Heuer become the joint owner of Edouard Heuer & Cie. In 1910 Henri Freund & Bros. take on the distribution of Heuer products for the American market. The company changes its name to “Ed. Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co.”. Manufacture of women’s wristwatches begins. The Heuer logo appears for the first time on the firm’s letterhead, In 1919 Heuer buys the Jules Jurgensen brand name. In 1920 the official name of the company is “Ed. Heuer & Cie., Rose Watches Successors of Jules Jurgensen.”. In 1922 the trademark “The Rose” is abandoned. Creation of models baptized “Paul Vallette” with Le Coultre movements. 1936 Heuer sells the Jules Jurgensen brand name. The firm is once again called “Ed. Heuer & Cie.”. In 1937 Heuer sells the “Paul Vallette” brand name. The following excerpt is from page 30 of the book, Heuer & TAG Heuer MASTERING TIME by, Gisbert L. Brunner & Marc Sich, “On September 13th, 1923 the two brothers and their mother set up the limited partnership of Edouard Heuer & Co., with Charles-Edouard as the managing partner and Hubert holding power of attorney and acting as sales director for the American market , now vital for their production. The new inheritors were convinced that success in the United States was the key to dominating the Swiss market. With Heuer watches causing a sensation in window displays of New York stores, the Swiss would not be long in coming around. Hubert had also spent long sojourns with Henry Freund. He had learned the strategic importance of choosing watch names adapted to the tastes, the trends and the spirit of the times. In 1922, Heuer stopped producing ‘The Rose’ series. With the Roaring Twenties a craze for all things French was catching on. Americans now loved champagne, Henri Matisse, and Claude Debussy. The Jurgensen catalog at the time happened to offer a model with a French surname, ‘Lavallette’. For the Heuer collection Henry Freund provided the final touch by adding a first name. To top it off, the newly christened ‘Paul Vallette’ models were equipped with a 17″‘ movement from the famous ‘Le Coultre’ house.” And from page 32, “Meanwhile, in the United States, Heuer had lost their ally. Henry Freund’s invention of the name “Paul Vallette” was his last stroke of genius. In 1926, the American importer died suddenly of a heart attack, leaving his business in the hands of his younger brother, Louis.” PAYMENT: Payment can be made by any method approved by eBay.
