This 1.75 liter hunting theme pewter stein made by the SKS company, is from my father’s stein collection. He never drank from them – they were kept behind glass for display purposes only. He collected his steins on trips to Europe during the 1980’s and early 1990’s, so the pieces in the collection are all considered vintage, and many are quite old. This enormous gorgeous must-have pewter stein is in MINT condition and served as a beautiful focal point. If you are interested in German and West German vintage steins, please see what else I am offering. I am still adding to the store daily. I know that this stein was purchased by my father during a trip to Europe in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s.The SKS company joined with the Artina company in Austria in 2009 and became Artina SKS, and production was moved to Austria. This new company continued making this same design. You can tell that this stein was made before the merger, by the stamp on the bottom that says “SKS made in Gernany”.The design is described by Artina as “An elaborate medieval “par force” hunting scene showing “the chase” wraps around the stein body. Following the system of par force (by strength) or par force de chiens (by force of dogs) was considered the most noble way of hunting deer/stag in medieval Europe.”Artina further describes the philosophy behind their design: “This detailed and ritualistic system of hunting included eight parts: the quest (tracking the game), the assembly (preparing & planning the hunt accompanied by breakfast), the relays (positioning the dogs in the path of the game, so as not to exhaust the dogs), the moving (fine tuned tracking), the chase (the actual hunt – where the dogs ran down and exhausted the game), the baying (the kill by sword or spear), the unmaking (the careful processing of the kill) and the curée (the dogs are rewarded). Hunting in medieval Europe was filled with symbolism. The deer was likened to Christ and the hunt became the quest towards salvation.”The design is a raised relief and was hand crafted by artisans. I don’t see any signs of wear or dents.It is imprinted on the bottom with the SKS ZINN logo (see pictures).I have priced this to be competitive with the other exact pieces that are being offered on this and other sites.
