Offered here is a rare, signed vintage Playbill: On Stage Ye Wilbur Theatre, a 1959 production of God And Kate Murphy, directed by stage and screen legend Burgess Meredith and with a star-studded cast consisting of Fay Compton, Mike Kellin, John McGiver, Larry Hagman, Lois Nettleton, Maureen Delany, and Pauline Flanagan, signed by ALL (including Meredith), 6″ x 9″; 16pp. Very good condition. OLIVER BURGESS MEREDITH (1907 – 1997) was an American actor and filmmaker whose career encompassed theater, film, and television. Active for more than six decades, Meredith has been called “a virtuosic actor” and “one of the most accomplished actors of the century”. A lifetime member of the Actors Studio, he won several Emmys, was the first male actor to win the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor twice, and was nominated for two Academy Awards. He established himself as a leading man in Hollywood with critically acclaimed performances as Mio Romagna in Winterset (1936), George Milton in Of Mice and Men (1939), and Ernie Pyle in The Story of G.I. Joe (1945). Meredith was known later in his career for his appearances on The Twilight Zone and for portraying The Penguin in the 1960s TV series Batman and boxing trainer Mickey Goldmill in the Rocky film series. For his performances in The Day of the Locust (1975) and Rocky (1976), he received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He later appeared in the comedy Foul Play (1978) and the fantasy film Clash of the Titans (1981). He narrated numerous films and documentaries during his long career. “Although those performances renewed his popularity,” observed Mel Gussow in The New York Times, “they represented only a small part of a richly varied career in which he played many of the more demanding roles in classical and contemporary theater—in plays by Shakespeare, O’Neill, Beckett and others.” VIRGINIA LILIAN EMMELINE COMPTON-MACKENZIE, (1894 – 1978), known professionally as Fay Compton, was an English actress. She appeared in several films, and made many broadcasts, but was best known for her stage performances. She was known for her versatility, and appeared in Shakespeare, drawing room comedy, pantomime, modern drama, and classics such as Ibsen and Chekhov. In addition to performing in Britain, Compton appeared several times in the US, and toured Australia and New Zealand in a variety of stage plays. LARRY MARTIN HAGMAN (1931 – 2012) was an American film and television actor, director, and producer, best known for playing ruthless oil baron J. R. Ewing in the 1978–1991 primetime television soap opera, Dallas, and the befuddled astronaut Major Anthony Nelson in the 1965–1970 sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. Hagman had supporting roles in numerous films, including Fail-Safe, Harry and Tonto, S.O.B., Nixon, and Primary Colors. His television appearances also included guest roles on dozens of shows spanning from the late 1950s until his death, and a reprise of his signature role on the 2012 revival of Dallas. Hagman also worked as a television producer and director. He was the son of actress Mary Martin. Hagman underwent a life-saving liver transplant in 1995. He died on November 23, 2012, from complications of acute myeloid leukemia. LOIS JUNE NETTLETON (1927 – 2008) was an American film, stage, radio, and television actress. She received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won two Daytime Emmy Awards. She performed in dozens of guest-starring roles on television shows, including The Twilight Zone (episode “The Midnight Sun”, 1961), Naked City, Route 66, Mr. Novak, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (episode “The Dark Pool”, 1963), The Eleventh Hour, Hawaii Five-O, Dr. Kildare, Twelve O’Clock High, The Fugitive, The F.B.I., Cannon, Bonanza, Gunsmoke (starring in 1961 as the title character in season-seven, episode 12’s “Nina’s Revenge”, where she played an abused wife driven to murder after finally finding love), The Virginian, and Daniel Boone. In 1973, she appeared on The Mary Tyler Moore Show as Lou Grant’s new boss, Barbara Coleman. She appeared in the pilot episode of The Eddie Capra Mysteries in 1978, and in hit TV miniseries, such as Washington: Behind Closed Doors and Centennial, as the murderous Maude Wendell. Nettleton won two Emmy Awards during her career. She won one for her role as Susan B. Anthony in the television film The American Woman: Profiles in Courage (1977), and for “A Gun for Mandy” (1983), which was an episode of the religious anthology Insight. She received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for the Golden Girls episode “Isn’t It Romantic?”. She also received Emmy nominations for her work in the TV movie Fear on Trial (1975) (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special) and for a recurring role on the series In the Heat of the Night in 1989 (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series). Nettleton appeared in a 2006 Christmas TV movie special titled The Christmas Card. A life member of the Actors Studio, Nettleton made her Broadway debut in the 1949 production of Dalton Trumbo’s play, The Biggest Thief in Town. She appeared in a short-lived off-Broadway production of Look Charlie, which was written by her future husband, humorist Jean Shepherd. It opened for three performances in late December 1958 and closed after several more the following February. She received critical praise for her performance as Blanche DuBois in a 1973 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. Nettleton was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance as Amy in a 1976 revival of They Knew What They Wanted. Her other stage credits include Broadway productions of Darkness at Noon and Silent Night, Lonely Night. She continued to act onstage into her 70s. Her final stage performance was in 2004, in an off-Broadway play, How to Build a Better Tulip. MIKE KELLIN (born Myron Kellin, 1922 – 1983) was an American actor. Kellin made his Broadway debut in 1949 in At War with the Army and repeated his role in the 1950 film version with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. He worked in some 50 plays and won an Obie Award for his work in American Buffalo and earned a Tony nomination in 1956 for his acting in the musical Pipe Dream. In 1956, he contributed the song preserven el parque elysian to a rally in support of Elysian Park. Pete Seeger recorded this song in 1965 for this album God Bless the Grass. Kellin appeared in both the film version of The Wackiest Ship in the Army (1960) and the 1965–1966 television series based on the film in the same role. In 1966, Kellin appeared in an episode on Lost in Space, titled “The Deadly Games of Gamma 6,” as Myko. Later in 1966, he played the lead as “Chad Timpson”, a reformed outlaw protecting his challenged brother, in “Moonstone” (S12E13) on the TV Western series Gunsmoke. He also appeared in an episode on The Twilight Zone, titled “The Thirty Fathom Grave”, and as a Southerner in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode “Night Of The Owl”. MAUREEN BARRY O’DELANY (1888 – 1961), professionally known as Maureen Delany and also billed as Maureen Delaney, was an Irish stage actress and screen actress of British films She was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, daughter of Barry Delany, who died when she was three months old. She was educated in Galway and originally intended to train for the opera, as she had a fine singing voice. However, she was accepted into the Abbey School of Acting by Lennox Robinson. She made her debut on the stage in Edward McNulty’s comedy The Lord Mayor in 1914. She quickly gained a reputation as a noted comic actress and singer. She became identified with Maisie Madigan in Juno and the Paycock and Bessie Burgess in The Plough and the Stars (both by Seán O’Casey), as well as the Widow Quin in Synge’s Playboy of the Western World. In 1959 she was nominated for a Tony Award for her part in the play GOD AND KATE MURPHY. She also appeared in a number of plays by Irish playwright Teresa Deevy which were staged at the Abbey Theatre, A Disciple in 1931, Temporal Powers in 1932, Katie Roche in 1937, which toured to the Ambassador Theatre, New York, USA, this play also toured to the Arts Theatre, Cambridge, England also in 1937, Temporal Powers in 1937, In Search of Valour[ in 1947. JOHN IRWIN McGIVER (1913 – 1975) was an American character actor who made more than a hundred appearances in television and motion pictures over a two-decade span from 1955 to 1975.The owl-faced, portly character actor with his mid-Atlantic accent and precise diction, was often cast as pompous Englishmen and other stuffy, aristocratic and bureaucratic types. He was known for his performances in such films as Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961); The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Who’s Minding the Store? (1963) and Man’s Favorite Sport? (1964). He appeared on many television shows and commercials during the 1960s and early 1970s, including the first of a long running popular series of commercials for the American Express charge card (“Do you know me?”). PAULINE FLANAGAN (1925 – 2003) was an Irish-born actress who had a long career on stage, she was best known in the United States for her role as Annie Colleary, on the television soap opera Ryan’s Hope in 1979 and again in 1981. She later returned to the show as Sister Mary Joel. Flanagan was born in County Sligo, Ireland, to Patrick and Elizabeth (née Mulligan) Flanagan, who were deeply political and supported the Republican Anti-Treaty during the Irish Civil War, both served as Lord Mayor of Sligo. Flanagan was good friends with fellow Irish actresses Joan O’Hara and Paddy Croft. Flanagan spent much of the early 1950s touring with Anew McMaster, where she met Harold Pinter at the Gate’s Pinter Festival. She appeared in many Broadway plays, making her debut in 1957 with Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood.[1] She starred in the 1976 Broadway revival of The Innocents. She appeared on Broadway in Philadelphia, Here I Come! in 1994. Flanagan also acted in Off-Broadway productions several times working including with the Irish Repertory Theatre, including Juno and the Paycock (1995). She appeared in the Harold Prince play Grandchild of Kings at the Irish Repertory Theatre in February 1992, receiving the 1992 Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Best Actress. Other Off-Broadway work included Yeats: A Celebration. She acted in the play Summer, by Hugh Leonard at the Hudson Guild Theater, directed by Brian Murray. (Summer premiered at the Olney Theatre, Maryland, in August 1974.)
